Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then found multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations show the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to its source; investigators are presently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they added.
City officials announced they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the residents for information.
A senior representative said the incident made him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the killing of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in February 2020.
