Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded increased openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet some do not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for an extended period only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were provided physical folders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
