In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
